Notes:
Current title of this painting is taken from Kent’s 1960 Soviet gift list. The painting has been known by several other titles, they include:
“Fox Island (Winter)”–noted on a Kent 35 mm slide title;
“Sun-Glare”–as titled in the “Know and Defend America” exhibition catalogue. For additional, alternate titles see “Rockwell Kent’s Forgotten Landscapes,” p. 92.
If this is a rework of the painting referred to as “Alaskan Scene,” in Fortune magazine (Jan. 1932), then the inscription at that time read: “Rockwell Kent 1919-27.” The initials “U.A.A” in the final inscription stands for United American Artists–an artists’ group to which Kent belonged in the 1930s.
