Notes:
“Frozen Falls (Alaska)” is the title found on the Peter A. Juley & Son photograph of this painting. The composition depicted in the Juley photograph matches the underpainting seen in the current rendition of the work.
Alternate title:
Original title, before the painting was reworked, was “Ice Curtains.”
Original signature was, “Rockwell Kent, Alaska, 1919.”
The underpainting of this work, depicting ice “curtains” on both sides of the composition, corresponds with the title “Ice Curtains,” listed as #7 in the 1920 Knoedler catalogue. The thematically similar compositions, AK1-15 and AK1-16, also show evidence of earlier compositions having been painted over.
