Alaska Impression 22
Oil on board
11 7/8 x 15 7/8 inches (30.2 x 40.3 cm)
Inscribed lower right:
“Rockwell Kent, Alaska, 1919”
Provenance:
Private Collection, Russia, circa 1960 (gift from the artist)
Private Collection, Munich, Germany
[Sotheby’s, 2017]
Notes:
Kent’s original inscription was covered over by the artist when he resigned his name. This act suggests that he touched up the painting before selling it. That Kent re-inscribed the exact same information is unusual in that it was more commonplace for the artist to either just resign his name or resign with the last date that he reworked the painting.
Inscribed on verso: “Snow Peaks/1942,” by unknown hand.
