Notes:
In a 1963 letter to his friend Corliss Lamont, Kent wrote of this painting: “‘To God!’–a title which to me means essentially, ‘To Life!’” He goes on to say: “I began the picture while I was living on Fox Island, Alaska, in the winter of 1918-1919 and have worked on it ever since”: Which clarifies the dates. The American Humanist Association retitled the painting, “To The Universe!”
