Notes:
Regarding titles – “Frozen Fall, Alaska” is a title typed on a small label (similar to other labels known to be generated by the artist) on the verso. “Frozen Fall,” is a variation thereof.
“Sun and Sea” is the caption for this painting, from an unknown publication (see Indianapolis Museum of Art Rockwell Kent file).
“Sun and Ice” is the title that appears in the 1920 Knoedler “Alaska Paintings” catalogue (#9).
“Frozen Waterfall, Alaska” is the title presumably assigned by Larcada Gallery: though it does appear in paperwork from Duval–an intermediary between Larcada and the Art Gallery of Hamilton.

Evidence in the underpainting shows the relationship of this painting to “Sun and Ice.” AK1-16 and AK1-17, both similar in composition and title, likewise show signs of underpainting depicting earlier compositions. Considering the similarities in the three present compositions and styles, it is believed that all paintings were reworked by the artist about the same time–circa 1952.
